Recovery Drink to Improve Strength & Stamina

Strength and Stamina

My husband is one of those people who ate anything and stayed rail thin. However, mid-age and years of desk work caught up to him. Around age fifty, his mid-line expanded, and his blood pressure and indigestion started rising.

As part of his New Year’s Resolution, he decided to train for 100-mile bike rides. He loves being out in the open with the wind in his face. He’s getting stronger, faster, and building stamina. However, his long Saturday bike rides around our hilly Maryland countryside wiped him out for the weekend.

For post-exercise recovery, he needed a better option than collapsing on the couch for a large chunk of Saturday afternoon. Luckily for him, I do a great deal of sports nutrition research.

Pre-Loading

SOS’s post-workout recovery drink mix is designed to promote stamina and strength when taken 30-60 minutes before vigorous activity or exercise.

Unlike some athletes' regimes which include essential amino acid loading from whey protein sources, SOS’s protein recovery drink mix contains specifically targeted high-quality amino acids to benefit the strength and endurance of athletes. It also has Vitamin C to provide antioxidants and a Proprietary Recovery Blend.

4600 mg Amino Booster Blend

Citrulline and Arginine

Citrulline and arginine are amino acids involved in the urea cycle and in nitric oxide production. Arginine is considered a conditionally essential amino acid and may not be produced by the body in sufficient quantities. The body readily turns citrulline into arginine.

In the urea cycle, both amino acids help move ammonia waste from the body. Toxic ammonia waste is a byproduct of the conversion of amino acids into energy.

Nitric oxide boosts blood flow to efficiently move oxygen and energy glycogen stores to engaged muscle tissue. One study found a 21% increase in plasma nitric oxide biomarkers with citrulline supplementation over placebo.

In sports performance research, long-term citrulline supplementation appears to provide better performance benefits over single-dose supplementation. The above study found seven days of supplementation increased cyclers’ test peak power by 9% on average and improved cycling exhaustion time by 12% on average.

Lysine

Lysine is an essential amino acid and the base building block of all proteins. Lysine helps build muscle protein to support sports recovery. It promotes muscle recovery, muscle damage repair, and reduced muscle soreness.

Lysine is essential in collagen formation. The protein collagen is in skin, connective tissue, and bones. In addition, Lysine is required for carnitine production. Carnitine helps transform fatty acids into energy.

Proline

Proline is a nonessential amino acid that is essential for the creation of collagen. Collagen promotes wound healing, strengthens joints, and gives bones the right amount of elasticity. All athletes need collagen to aid in protecting and repairing tendons and ligaments.

300 mg of Vitamin C

Much like cherry juice, our recovery blend is full of antioxidants to aid the immune system and help fight joint inflammation associated with the normal wear and tear of activity.

2687.5 mg Proprietary Recovery Blend

MSM (methylsulfonyl-methane)

MSM supplementation may support antioxidant protection from exercise-induced oxidization and help reduce osteoarthritis symptoms according to a study published in 2011. Another study showed a preloaded supplementation of MSM may help reduce blood serum markers for muscle damage. Muscle soreness and fatigue may also be aided by long-term MSM supplementation. (2012 study)

Ashwagandha

The root extract of ashwagandha is used in Ayurveda medicine to aid stress reduction and cortisol levels.

A double-blind, placebo-controlled study of non-trained young males found daily supplementation of 300 mg of Ashwagandha may significantly aid power output in resistance training while helping to reduce exercise-induced muscle damage. At the end of eight weeks, the study noted placebo group’s testosterone levels averaged 18.0 ng/dL while the ashwagandha supplement group’s averaged 96.2 ng/dL.

Pine Bark Extract

Pine Bark Extract may aid sports recovery with its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Researchers are looking to understand the science behind how and why it might help individuals with moderate to advanced osteoarthritis.

No More Post Training Crashes

After researching and acquiring SOS’s R3 Recovery Drink, my husband’s post riding habits have changed. Unfortunately, finding a reasonably priced road bike has been more difficult. Last Saturday after his 30-mile ride with a 1,800-foot elevation change on his trusty old GT mountain bike, he spent the afternoon taking down our neighbor’s forty-foot tree and hauling it away. Nice!
